Fenerbahçe Eyes Greenwood Signing, But Star Forward Reportedly Hesitant About Mourinho Reunion.

Manchester United's Mason Greenwood Draws Interest from Fenerbahçe, But Mourinho Factor Creates Uncertainty

Mason Greenwood's future remains shrouded in uncertainty as Turkish giants Fenerbahçe emerge as potential suitors, but reports suggest the player is apprehensive about a reunion with former manager José Mourinho.

Greenwood, a talented 22-year-old striker, finds himself at a crossroads after his loan spell at Getafe in Spain concluded. While Manchester United hold his registration, his status with the club remains unclear following his off-field controversies.

Several Premier League teams have expressed interest in acquiring the £75,000-a-week forward, while European giants like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, and Juventus have also been linked to him.

Adding another twist to the ongoing saga is Fenerbahçe's reported pursuit. The Turkish club's interest comes just days after the appointment of José Mourinho as their new manager. The Portuguese tactician, who previously managed Greenwood at Manchester United, might seem like a familiar face, but it appears the player himself harbors reservations.

"Fenerbahçe are interested in Mason," revealed a source. "They acknowledge his talent and believe having Mourinho as manager could be an attractive proposition."

Greenwood's association with Mourinho goes back to 2018 when, as a mere 16-year-old, he was included in the United squad for their pre-season US tour under the Portuguese manager's leadership. Former United midfielder Nicky Butt further highlighted Mourinho's recognition of Greenwood's potential.

"He inquired about 'this kid Greenwood' when Mason was just 15," Butt said, referring to his time at United's academy during Mourinho's tenure. "'Bring him to train with us,' he said, but I couldn't because he was still in school."

Greenwood's career trajectory took a significant detour in January 2022 when he was arrested on allegations of attempted rape and assault. Although the charges were subsequently dropped, Manchester United conducted an internal review and opted to loan him out to Getafe last season.

Greenwood's performance in Spain was impressive, earning him the club's Player of the Season award after contributing ten goals and six assists in 36 appearances.

New Manchester United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe signaled a potential return for Greenwood earlier this year, stating that the club needed to make a "fresh decision" regarding his future.

With his contract at Old Trafford valid until 2025, with a potential one-year extension, Manchester United retains control over Greenwood's future. However, the player's reported hesitation about reuniting with Mourinho at Fenerbahçe adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

As the summer transfer window opens, all eyes will be on Mason Greenwood and the club he chooses to continue his career with. Whether he remains at Manchester United, seeks a fresh start in the Premier League, or ventures abroad, one thing remains certain: his decision will be closely watched by fans and clubs alike.
