Peacock Cancels 5 Shows Including Kaley Cuoco’s Hit Drama
Peacock Cancels Five Original Series, Including Fan Favorite 'Laid' and Kaley Cuoco’s 'Based on a True Story'.

In a surprising move that has disappointed many fans, Peacock has officially cancelled five original shows, including the horror-thriller series Teacup and Hysteria!, the retro sports-themed Mr. Throwback, the acclaimed dark comedy Based on a True Story, and most recently, the inventive drama Laid.
A Wave of Cancellations Leaves Fans Reeling
Peacock, the streaming platform known for its diverse mix of original and acquired programming, has made headlines in April 2025 after confirming that five original series will not be returning for additional seasons.
First announced were the horror-inspired thrillers Teacup and Hysteria!, both of which aired only one season before getting axed. Then came the unexpected news that Mr. Throwback, a show tapping into nostalgia and sports culture, would also be discontinued. The fourth title to meet the chopping block was Based on a True Story, a dark comedy headlined by Kaley Cuoco, which had garnered a loyal fanbase and positive critical reception.
Now, the cancellation of Laid has sparked a new wave of backlash — with many fans arguing that Peacock is pulling the plug too early on creative, original content that was never given the promotional push it deserved.

‘Laid’ Cancelled After One Season Despite Cliffhanger
Laid, a darkly comedic mystery series, stars Stephanie Hsu as Ruby Yao, a woman who discovers that her former sexual partners are dying in the exact order in which she slept with them. The show’s unique premise, mixed with moments of introspective drama and biting satire, made it a standout among new 2024 shows.
Latest News
Despite ending its first season on a shocking cliffhanger that had viewers demanding answers, Laid has now been cancelled by Peacock. Fans immediately took to social media to express their frustration, citing a lack of marketing and exposure as the main reasons the show failed to catch on with a wider audience.
“This was a lovely show. They did no promotions btw,” one viewer posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“Where was the promo? They didn’t even get a chance,” another wrote.
“Ugh!! This is the worst!!” a third user added.
Several fans described the cancellation as another example of original ideas being neglected in favor of formulaic or franchise-based content.
“Another case of original ideas being ignored to the point of letting them rot and die,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
“Peacock should just give up on original content. They’re obviously not good at keeping a show past two seasons,” said another user.
Kaley Cuoco’s ‘Based on a True Story’ Also Gets the Axe
Among the shows with the highest-profile talent to be cancelled was Based on a True Story, starring Kaley Cuoco, who plays Ava Bartlett, a pregnant real estate agent obsessed with true crime. The dark comedy premiered in June 2023, with a second season launching in November 2024.

The show was praised for its meta-narrative on America’s obsession with murder media, mixing suspense with satire. Cuoco’s portrayal of Ava was widely acclaimed, and the series held a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, according to aggregated reviews.
Fans were stunned by the decision to cancel the show after only two seasons, especially given its growing popularity.
“I found out Based on a True Story was recently canceled and I’m so bummed,” one fan tweeted.
“Very disappointed to hear that you have canceled Based on a True Story after 2 seasons. I am probably going to cancel my paid subscription and just boycott your channel altogether,” another posted.
Kaley Cuoco herself previously shared her enthusiasm for the project in an interview with Awards Review:
“A lot of boxes were checked for me in this show. The writing was fantastic,” she said. “I love true crime. I literally fall asleep to Dateline every single night. I watch repeats, I listen to murder podcasts.”
Cuoco also mentioned how the character of Ava mirrored her own life in several ways:
“I also grew up playing tennis. There’s a lot of parts from this show that made sense for me. And knowing that I was going to work with Chris Messina was something I really wanted to do, too.”
Messina played Ava’s husband Nathan, a former tennis pro who becomes entangled in her dangerous obsession with crime. The show also starred Tom Bateman as Matt Pierce, completing the triangle of complex characters navigating twisted secrets and deadly truths.
Streaming Fatigue and Fan Frustration Grow
With these cancellations, Peacock is facing growing criticism over how it handles original programming. Fans and critics alike have accused the platform of failing to properly promote unique content, instead pushing legacy shows or content tied to large franchises.

While the streaming market continues to be saturated with choices, viewers are becoming more vocal when they feel quality shows are abandoned too quickly.
“I’m tired of getting invested in a show just to see it canceled without any closure,” one fan said on Instagram. “Why even bother trying new things?”
What This Means for Peacock’s Future
As Peacock struggles to define its original content strategy, these recent cancellations may damage the platform’s reputation among creatives and audiences. It raises a serious question: Can original shows survive in the current streaming climate without massive marketing budgets or instant viral success?
The answer might lie in how streaming platforms like Peacock evolve to support creative risks and viewer engagement beyond just initial ratings.
For now, fans mourning Laid, Based on a True Story, and the others are left with questions — and unfinished stories.
