Royal Heartbreak: Crown Prince Leka II and Crown Princess Elia of Albania Announce Divorce After 7 Years of Marriage
The former couple, who exchanged vows in a lavish ceremony in 2016, made the announcement through a heartfelt statement posted on Crown Prince Leka's official Instagram account on Monday.
"Hello friends and lovers," the translated message began, "Through this post, I officially inform you that LTM Prince Leka and Elia Zharaia have agreed to end their marriage. Since marriage has lost its function, they have decided to resolve it with mutual consent by starting the necessary legal procedures."
Despite the challenges of separation, the couple emphasized their commitment to their 3-year-old daughter, Princess Geraldine, assuring that she remains at the center of their dedicated attention for a happy and safe life. The post continued, "Regardless of the commitment to the institution of the family, LTM Leka believes that the values of mutual respect and understanding will form the basis of the relationship in its continuity, which will have as its motive the growth and education of LSM Princess Geraldine!!!"
Crown Princess Elia, a 40-year-old actress and singer, also released a statement on the split, although it has been subsequently deleted from the platform. In her message, she reportedly shared, "Friends and well-wishers, I need to inform you that today we started the legal procedures for the settlement of marriage, as we jointly decided to seek a divorce. This is not at all a reality that makes me happy, as I believe in family values as the most precious thing! I would never have chosen for my daughter to grow up with separate parents, but sometimes separation is the only option."
Expressing gratitude for the support she has received during these difficult times, Crown Princess Elia continued, "Despite these difficult months I've gone through, your kindness has given me strength. I wish you health and happiness in your families."
The couple's decision to part ways comes four years after the joyous occasion of welcoming their daughter, Princess Geraldine, named after the prince's late grandmother, Queen Geraldine.
Crown Prince Leka II, as the head of the Albanian royal family, has proudly embraced his role as a "custodian of the Monarchy's legacy." He holds a balanced position in Albanian politics, symbolizing Albanian unity, according to the royal family's official website.
Crown Prince Leka II assumed the role of the heir to the Albanian crown in 2011 following the passing of his father, King Leka I. The royal couple's divorce announcement marks a poignant moment in their shared journey, and the public, along with well-wishers, remains attentive to their future endeavors as individuals while hoping for the well-being of Princess Geraldine during this challenging time.
