Selena Gomez Faces Backlash Over Alleged Shade at Hailey Bieber Following Rhode's $1B Sale.

Selena Gomez is under scrutiny after a recent social media post by her beauty brand, Rare Beauty, sparked accusations of subtly mocking Hailey Bieber's monumental $1 billion sale of her skincare line, Rhode, to e.l.f. Beauty.

On May 30, Rare Beauty's official Instagram account shared two striking images of Gomez, captioned succinctly, "Still here." One photo featured the singer blowing a kiss to the camera, while the other showcased her gazing directly into the lens with a confident expression. The timing of the post—just a day after news broke of Rhode's acquisition—led many to interpret it as a veiled jab at Bieber's business move.

Fans and followers quickly took to the comments section to express their disapproval. One user remarked, "It seems like Hailey is always on her mind. Pathetic." Another commented, "She actually pisses me off. Like MOVE ON UR A GROWN A** WOMAN." The backlash highlighted the ongoing tension perceived between the two celebrities, despite their previous attempts to quell such narratives.

Hailey Bieber's Rhode, launched in 2022, has seen rapid success in the beauty industry. The brand's acquisition by e.l.f. Beauty includes $600 million in cash, $200 million in stock, and an additional $200 million in performance-based earnouts over three years. Bieber retains a significant role in the company, serving as Chief Creative Officer and Head of Innovation, overseeing product development and creative strategy.

In a statement regarding the sale, Bieber expressed her excitement: "When I launched Rhode in 2022, I always had big dreams for the company... I feel invigorated, excited, and more ready than ever to step into an even bigger role."

Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty, founded in 2020, has also achieved significant milestones. By 2024, the brand was valued at over $2 billion, with net sales surpassing $400 million in the 12 months ending February 2024. Rare Beauty is recognized as one of Sephora’s best-selling brands and is noted for its rapid growth on social media platforms.

The history between Gomez and Bieber has been a topic of public interest, primarily due to their connections with singer Justin Bieber. Despite public statements aiming to dispel rumors of a feud, including a joint appearance at the 2022 Academy Museum Gala and mutual calls for fans to cease online hostility, tensions appear to resurface periodically.

In June 2023, Hailey Bieber addressed the ongoing speculation in an interview, stating, "This is not about this pitting between two women—it’s about the vile, disgusting hatred that can come from completely made-up and twisted and perpetuated narratives."

As of now, neither Gomez nor representatives from Rare Beauty have commented on the recent controversy. The incident underscores the complexities of public perception and the challenges celebrities face in navigating personal and professional narratives in the digital age.
