During an appearance on The Download podcast with Justin Laboy, West discussed his recent cash flow problems. "We never was unrich," he stated, seemingly contradicting previous reports of his financial struggles. However, the conversation took a turn when Laboy recounted an incident at the now-closed Beauty & Essex restaurant. "I remember when they froze your accounts," Laboy recalled. "Man, I remember I had to put my little American Express down. That was the first time I saw a billionaire have no access to money.”
West confirmed Laboy's story, describing the experience as "crazy" and like a "Black Mirror episode." He suggested that the account freeze was a form of retaliation for his controversial statements. "They wanted to do everything to prove to me that I didn’t have the right to say anything out loud that went against the people who own the media and the people who own the music industry - the people that Drake is going up against right now, ironically," West asserted. He then went on to criticize censorship, arguing that while certain violent or drug-related lyrics are acceptable, expressing dissenting opinions is not.
The conversation later returned to the topic of wealth. West mused about the outward displays of affluence, stating, "When you got money, you go in and prove you have got money. I remember when I lost all the money, I was like ‘damn I better start dressing like a millionaire now’, which actually means more jewellery. When you are a billionaire you can dress super bummy." He then made a provocative and widely criticized comment, saying, "A n***** is never going to sell his chain, it doesn’t matter, n***** sell their children before their chain.”
