SAG Awards 2024: Big Names Snubbed, Blockbusters Shine

SAG Awards 2024: Big Names Snubbed, Blockbusters Shine

Additionally, the controversial film "May December," featuring Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, was notably absent from the list.

The SAG-AFTRA National Honors and Tributes Committee, responsible for nominating and voting for the awards, raised eyebrows with its choices. Despite critical acclaim for his role in Martin Scorsese's "Killers Of The Flower Moon," Leonardo DiCaprio failed to secure a nomination in the competitive field.

Natalie Portman, who delivered a powerful performance in the Todd Haynes film centered around a Mary Kay Letourneau-esque scandal, also found herself overlooked, despite widespread praise for her portrayal.

Similarly, Zac Efron, earning rave reviews for his role as pro-wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the tragic film "The Iron Claw," was conspicuously absent from the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category.

While these A-list actors faced disappointment, the SAG Awards showered recognition on films such as "Oppenheimer," "Barbie," and "American Fiction." The nominees for the coveted Best Ensemble award include "American Fiction," "Barbie," "The Color Purple," "Killers of the Flower Moon," and "Oppenheimer."

Notably omitted from this list was Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things," which clinched the Best Comedy/Musical category at the recent Golden Globes. Emma Stone received a nomination for Best Actress, but the film and its ensemble cast were left out of the prestigious SAG nominations.

Another glaring omission was the film "Air," starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Viola Davis. Despite receiving acclaim upon its release in April 2023 for its exploration of Nike's creation of the iconic Air Jordan basketball shoes, the film failed to garner any attention from SAG voters.

"The Color Purple" secured a Best Ensemble nomination, but the absence of Fantasia Barrino, who received widespread praise for her performance in the remake, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who delivered a staggering performance in Ava DuVernay's "Origin," raised eyebrows.

The SAG Awards are often viewed as an Oscar bellwether, with their nominations serving as a significant predictor of success at the Academy Awards. While the picks may not align precisely, SAG nominations are crucial in the race for Best Picture and acting categories at the Oscars.

This year's SAG Awards follow a challenging 118-day strike by the actors' guild, SAG-AFTRA, which tackled issues surrounding pay in the streaming era and concerns related to artificial intelligence in the industry.

The 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards are scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 24, at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be streamed live on Netflix, marking the first time the SAG Awards will be available on the streaming platform following a multiyear partnership signed last year. The nominations have set the stage for an intriguing awards season, leaving fans and industry insiders eager to see how the SAG choices will influence the upcoming Oscars.
