Skydiver Feared to Have Taken Her Own Life in 10,000ft Jump Day After Breaking Up with Boyfriend.

A highly experienced skydiver tragically fell to her death in what authorities fear may have been a deliberate act just one day after ending her relationship.

Jade Damarell, 32, was killed instantly when she hit the ground during a 10,000-foot solo jump at a skydiving facility in Peterlee, County Durham, on April 27, 2025. The seasoned skydiver, who had completed more than 400 jumps, was participating in what should have been a routine descent. However, her parachute never opened.

Inquest Suggests No Equipment Malfunction

An inquest into the incident revealed no signs of equipment failure, and her skydiving club, Sky-High Skydiving, has since confirmed that the tragedy appeared to be “a deliberate act.”

Durham Constabulary ruled out any third-party involvement, and officials emphasized that there was no suggestion of negligence or wrongdoing by the skydiving center.

Coroner’s officer Alexis Blighe confirmed that the provisional cause of death was “blunt trauma.”

Letters Reveal Intent

It has now emerged that Jade Damarell left behind several letters indicating she may have planned to take her own life. These written messages have led investigators and loved ones to believe the act was intentional.

A friend close to the situation told MailOnline, “This wasn’t an accident. We believe she intended to take her life, sadly.”

Breakup May Have Preceded Tragedy

The inquest also uncovered that Damarell had ended her relationship with her boyfriend, 26-year-old Ben Goodfellow, just one day before the fatal jump. Goodfellow, who is also a skydiving enthusiast and car technician, had been dating Jade for around eight months.

Latest News

The couple had grown extremely close and were described by friends as “inseparable.” They had reportedly been living together in a lodge on the grounds of the skydiving center since the previous Christmas.

According to one source, “The night before Jade died, they called off the relationship. He went to work the next day, and that’s when Jade fell to her death.”

Goodfellow, who is also a musician with the band Post Rome, has not spoken publicly about the incident but canceled performances in the wake of the tragedy due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Friends say he is “absolutely distraught.”

Identified by Chief Instructor

Jade’s body was discovered at Wrefords’ Farm, a rural area near the skydiving site. Her remains were formally identified by Bryn Chaffe, the chief instructor at Sky-High Skydiving.

Nigel Wreford, 56, who works on the nearby farm, said he had heard from several people that Jade “knew what she was doing” and that she had left a suicide note.

A Life Full of Passion and Purpose

Jade Damarell had studied marketing at a university in Leeds and later married solicitor James Damarell in 2019. Although they had once lived together in Yorkshire, the couple eventually separated. Jade later moved into a rental property commonly used by skydivers in Peterlee.

Her family has since released a heartfelt statement honoring her memory, describing her as a “brilliant, beautiful, brave and truly extraordinary person.”

The tribute continued:

“Professionally, Jade was exceptionally talented, and she found freedom and purpose through skydiving. A bright, adventurous, free spirit, she lived with immense energy, passion, and love, and touched countless lives with her warmth and kindness.

We miss her beyond words, but Jade’s love, brilliance, courage, and light will live on in our family and among all those who knew and loved her.

Some stars are so bright they burn through their time too quickly – but their light never truly fades.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone in the emergency services, the local first responders, and the skydiving community. Your care and compassion mean more to us than we can express.”

In their closing remarks, Jade’s family included a message to others who might be struggling with their mental health:

“Lastly, if you are struggling, please reach out. Talk to someone – a friend, loved one, or professional. You are never alone.”

Coroner’s Inquest Set for August

Crook Coroner’s Court, presided over by Area Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield, has adjourned the full inquest until August 21, 2025. The formal hearing is expected to provide additional insight into the moments leading up to Jade’s death, the circumstances surrounding her mental state, and the final jump.

As the inquest proceeds, many in the skydiving community and beyond are left reflecting on how someone so full of life and talent could experience such darkness.
