Cannabis-Using Nursery Worker on Trial for Allegedly Abusing 23 Babies—Claims Mood Swings When She Couldn't Vape.

London, UK — A 22-year-old nursery worker is currently on trial at Kingston Crown Court amid shocking allegations that she assaulted more than 20 babies under her care at a prestigious London nursery. Roksana Lecka, formerly employed at Riverside Nursery in Twickenham, South West London, is accused of pinching, punching, and grabbing toddlers during a six-month period in 2023.

Riverside Nursery, which charges up to £1,900 a month for childcare and follows the Montessori teaching method, was the scene of the alleged child cruelty. Prosecutors claim that Lecka left babies with visible injuries including scratches on their faces and necks, red pinch marks on their legs, and bruises on their bodies.

Regular Cannabis Use and Vaping Addiction

During her testimony, Lecka admitted to being a regular cannabis user and said she vaped compulsively—often during working hours. “At that time, I was really addicted to vapes. I would smoke two little crystal disposables a day,” she told the court, as reported by Mail Online. “I was vaping in the nursery. Because if I did not smoke, I would get agitated and fed up.”

Lecka explained that she frequently concealed her vape device in her bra and would take quick puffs whenever possible. She said her moodiness would escalate if she was unable to vape, contributing to her becoming “fed up” at work. She further claimed that her exhaustion and emotional stress were due to a lack of sleep and being overly attached to her boyfriend, whom she admitted to “over-prioritising.”

Her defence team argued that Lecka was overwhelmed, suffering from severe menstrual pain, and lacked energy—characteristics that left her “not her normally bubbly self.”

Prosecutors: “No Excuse for Abuse”

However, prosecutor Tracy Ayling KC rejected the claims as mere justifications. “These are excuses, not explanations,” Ayling told the jury. “It is clear her actions are deliberate or at the very least careless, but on most occasions, we say deliberate.”

Ayling emphasized that Lecka’s behavior was consistent and sustained. “There are some clips where Ms Lecka, as we put it, keeps going back for more,” she noted, referencing CCTV footage that allegedly captured the abuse in real-time.

Shocking Footage Shown in Court

Jurors were shown disturbing CCTV footage from the nursery, including clips where Lecka allegedly pinched the face, legs, and underarms of crying children. In one clip, she was reportedly seen vaping before lifting a baby from a crib, then pinching and punching the infant’s side.

Another video allegedly showed Lecka repeatedly pinching a girl at a table until the child cried. She then allegedly yanked the girl's arm and pulled her hair with such force that her head hit the table. In yet another incident, Lecka was seen pinching a child’s nose, wrist, and mouth, according to the prosecution.

The court heard that Lecka appeared to scan the room to check whether other staff were watching before allegedly committing these acts. One colleague reportedly witnessed Lecka pinching a boy’s legs and notified the headteacher, prompting a review of CCTV footage. That review led to the discovery of more incidents.

The police later analyzed an entire month of CCTV footage and concluded that 23 children had been “badly treated in some way.” A 24th count of child cruelty, though included in the charges, allegedly took place before Lecka formally joined the nursery staff.

No Initial Safeguarding Concerns

According to court testimony, there were no safeguarding concerns raised during Lecka’s hiring process. Her employment background and references were reportedly in order at the time she was brought on board by Riverside Nursery.

But the discovery of the footage last summer triggered immediate action. Lecka was arrested on July 5, 2023, and taken into custody for questioning.

Lecka's Response to Allegations

In a prepared statement read during police interviews, Lecka denied the allegations. “I deny assaulting any children at the Riverside Nursery. I went into work that day and had a normal day. There were no accidents where any child seemed hurt,” she stated. “We have procedures for the handling of the children, which I adhered to. I am unaware how any injury to these children was caused.”

Despite her denial, Lecka has admitted to two charges of child cruelty. However, she firmly denies the remaining 21 charges brought against her.

Ongoing Trial and Public Outcry

The trial, which is expected to continue into late June, has prompted widespread outrage from parents and child welfare advocates. With Riverside Nursery catering to infants and toddlers under the age of two, the seriousness of the allegations has sparked debates around the robustness of hiring practices and internal safeguarding procedures at private childcare institutions.

Parents who send their children to the Montessori-based nursery are reportedly shocked and devastated. “It’s every parent’s worst nightmare,” said one mother whose child previously attended the nursery. “You trust these people with your most precious loved ones.”

Riverside Nursery has not released a public statement regarding the ongoing trial, but it is believed that the institution is cooperating fully with the investigation and reviewing its own internal protocols.

Lecka could face a significant prison sentence for her alleged crimes against vulnerable children.

As the trial continues, the case raises urgent questions about child protection in early years settings and highlights the critical importance of staff screening and oversight. If convicted, Roksana Lecka could face a significant prison sentence for her alleged crimes against vulnerable children. Until the trial concludes, the spotlight remains firmly on safeguarding standards—and whether the systems currently in place are enough to prevent future harm.

The trial remains ongoing.
