Laura Hamilton Says A Place In The Sun 'Backfired' as She Shares How the Show Has Changed Her Children and Family Life.

TV presenter Laura Hamilton, best known for helping hopeful buyers find their dream homes abroad on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun, has revealed that her role on the show has had some unexpected consequences—particularly when it comes to raising her two children.

In a candid conversation, the 43-year-old opened up about the "backfired" effects of her glamorous globetrotting job, explaining how her extensive travel and exposure to luxury dining have had a surprising impact on her son Rocco, 11, and daughter Tahlia, 10. Laura, who shares her two children with ex-husband Alex Goward, says her kids have developed sophisticated taste buds from their adventures overseas—so much so that eating out has become noticeably more expensive.

“We always have the cuisine in the place we’re in,” Laura explained. “So much so it’s backfired a little bit now, because if we go to a restaurant, my son will be like, ‘No, I don’t want the kids’ menu—I’m going full-blown adult’s menu.’”

While she celebrates their adventurous palates, the presenter admits it’s become a bit of a challenge. “They’ve got a really great palette for stuff,” she said proudly. “I love my children being experimental with food—they’ll eat anything, they’re not fussy.”

Since joining A Place in the Sun in 2012, Laura has travelled to countless sun-soaked locations, introducing viewers to life-changing opportunities abroad. But behind the scenes, she juggles the challenges of being a devoted mother, even after her 2022 separation from Alex Goward. The couple had been together since 2009 and tied the knot in 2012 before amicably parting ways.

Laura shared news of the split on Instagram, writing, “This isn’t something I ever thought I’d be saying, but after 13 years of being together, Alex and I have separated. Our children are and always will be our number one priority.” She accompanied the statement with a heartfelt quote: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

The former couple have worked hard to maintain a balanced co-parenting arrangement. Speaking on the Spinning Plates podcast with Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Laura detailed how she and Alex split custody of their children evenly. “They’re with their dad one week and with me one week,” she explained. “It’s great—we had the children together, we parent them together, and they get the best of both of us. We’ve managed to make that setup work.”

She added that the children are happy with the arrangement, and it offers them stability. “They love it,” she said. “If I ever turned around to my children and said, ‘Oh, you’re going to be with me all the time’—which I never would—they’d be annoyed. They’d say, ‘No, it’s Dad’s week this week!’”

Despite the healthy dynamic, Laura revealed she’s no stranger to criticism—particularly from strangers online. “If I ever post things on my socials about being away anywhere, I get comments: ‘Where are the kids? Where are the kids?’” she said. “No one knows my situation, and actually, we spend an equal amount of time with them and do lots of stuff with them—independently.”

Although the comments initially triggered guilt, Laura says she’s worked through those emotions. “Yes, when they’re with their dad, do I miss them? Of course I do. But I use that time to really do the work I would be doing when I was going away.”

Laura also recently opened up about her personal life in a more light-hearted way, revealing she once went on a date with international music star Shaggy—and ended up footing the bill herself. The story, while unexpected, added a cheeky insight into her life post-divorce and made headlines among her fans.

Her openness and honesty, both about parenting and personal challenges, have earned her a dedicated following—though she still navigates the pitfalls of being in the public eye. Recently, she also hit back at what she described as A Place in the Sun viewers’ “number one complaint,” which sparked an unexpected bout of mum-shaming.

Still, Laura remains defiant, expressing pride in her dual role as a working mother and television presenter. Despite some bumps along the way—including high restaurant bills thanks to her kids’ newly refined tastes—she continues to prioritise her children’s wellbeing and strives for balance in every aspect of her life.

Whether she’s jet-setting for work, enjoying family time in the UK, or dodging unfair criticism online, one thing is clear: Laura Hamilton is determined to parent with grace, resilience, and honesty—even when it’s not always sunshine and smooth sailing.
