Telegram’s Pavel Durov to Leave £17bn to 106 Children
Telegram Billionaire Pavel Durov to Leave £17 Billion Fortune to His 106 Children—But With a Catch.

Pavel Durov, the billionaire tech mogul behind the globally popular messaging app Telegram, has announced that his entire £17 billion fortune will be left to his children—an estimated 106 in total. In a recent interview with Le Point magazine in France, Durov revealed that his heirs include both naturally conceived children and those born through his prolific sperm donation efforts across 12 countries.
The revelation has sparked widespread interest and debate, not only due to the vast amount of wealth involved but also because of Durov’s unconventional views on fatherhood, inheritance, and self-sufficiency. The 40-year-old Russian-born entrepreneur made it clear that while he acknowledges all 106 children as his rightful heirs, they will not be able to access their inheritance for another 30 years.

“They are all my children and will all have the same rights,” Durov said in the interview. “I don’t want them to tear each other apart after my death.”
Despite the staggering size of his fortune, Durov emphasized that none of his children would receive immediate financial benefit. His aim is to encourage independence, creativity, and resilience in their lives.
“I want them to live like normal people,” he continued. “To build their lives on their own, to learn to trust themselves, to be able to create—not to be dependent on a bank account.”
A Father of 106: A Global Legacy
While Durov has six children with three known partners, the bulk of his offspring come from what he described as “mass-scale” sperm donation. He has reportedly fathered children for dozens of couples across 12 different countries, creating a network of half-siblings that now numbers over 100.

The unusual nature of Durov’s family life came to light last year when Irina Bolgar, a 44-year-old Russian woman living in Switzerland, publicly claimed he fathered her three children. In a feature published in Russian Forbes, Bolgar alleged that Durov is the biological father of her daughter and two sons, born between 2013 and 2017 in St. Petersburg. She even published photos of herself and her children, noting that the children carry Durov’s surname.
The billionaire has not publicly denied these claims and has since confirmed that he has fathered numerous children via donation.
Who Is Pavel Durov?
Known as the "Mark Zuckerberg of Russia," Pavel Durov is a household name in the tech world. Born in Russia in 1984, Durov spent part of his childhood in Italy before returning to St. Petersburg, where his father worked as a scholar of ancient Roman literature.
Durov made his mark in the digital world early on. At just 21, he founded VKontakte (VK), often dubbed the "Facebook of Russia." The platform quickly gained popularity and became the dominant social network in the country. However, Durov’s refusal to cooperate with Russian authorities—particularly his decision to withhold data on Ukrainian protestors—eventually led to his ousting from the company. In 2014, he was effectively forced to sell his stake and leave Russia.
This pivotal moment laid the groundwork for his next major project: Telegram. Launched as a secure, privacy-focused messaging app, Telegram now boasts over one billion monthly active users globally. The app has grown exponentially, particularly among users seeking alternatives to mainstream platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Despite offers from investors and governments, Durov has remained the sole owner of Telegram and has refused to sell or compromise on his principles of privacy and free communication.
Legal Troubles in France
Though currently residing in Dubai, Durov also holds dual French and Emirati citizenship. In recent years, he has faced legal scrutiny in Europe. In 2024, French authorities placed Durov under judicial supervision amid an investigation into a range of alleged crimes, including drug trafficking, child exploitation, and financial fraud—charges linked to activity occurring on the Telegram platform.
Durov denied any wrongdoing and returned to Dubai in March 2025 after briefly cooperating with French judicial authorities. His legal team maintains that he cannot be held responsible for user activity on Telegram, which functions similarly to other end-to-end encrypted platforms.

Over the years, Durov has attempted to settle in cities like Berlin, London, and San Francisco, but has consistently cited bureaucratic challenges and restrictions as major roadblocks. Ultimately, he found a more hospitable environment in Dubai, where he now lives and operates Telegram.
The billionaire’s decision to remain the sole stakeholder in Telegram, paired with his refusal to bow to governmental pressures, has won him a loyal following among privacy advocates. At the same time, critics argue that Telegram’s lack of moderation and encrypted nature have made it a haven for illegal activities.
A Fortune With Strings Attached
Durov’s unprecedented decision to delay the distribution of his wealth to his children adds another layer to his already controversial public persona. While most billionaires establish foundations or trusts to manage their wealth posthumously, Durov has opted for a more rigid approach—one he believes will protect both his legacy and his children's autonomy.
With no clear plan on how the massive estate will be managed over the next 30 years, legal experts have raised questions about how the delay might affect future inheritance rights, especially among children conceived via anonymous sperm donation.
Still, Durov remains firm in his belief:
“Wealth should not be a crutch—it should be earned. That’s the legacy I want to leave behind.”
As the Telegram founder continues to dominate global headlines, it’s clear that both his platform and his personal life remain far from ordinary. Whether his unconventional inheritance strategy will succeed in uniting or dividing his 106 children is a story that only time can tell.
